STEFANO FAKE & THE FAKE FACTORY “YELLOW BANANA (after Warhol)” (2004)

The yellow banana (1967) has become one of the most recognized symbols of Warhol.
Warhol was responsible for the design of the debut album cover of The Velvet Underground & Nico which was released in 1967. He was much involved with this American rock band after spotting their talent. The band had just performed and was fired by their music label immediately because the show was considered too outrageous and vulgar by the organizers. Warhol, on the other hand, loved their performance. Rather than a typical album cover with the band members, Warhol’s design was perfectly juxtaposed with the band’s avant-garde direction explained by its experimental sounds, controversial lyrics, and flamboyant live performances. It was a banana in Pop art style on a white background with his autograph. There was a sticker with a sexually provocative reference: “Peel Slowly and See”. Under the sticker was a fresh pink banana and the rest is up to your imagination This colloquially known as the banana album also became a sought-after memorabilia created by the icon of Pop culture. Unfortunately, the cost of production was too high, so subsequent cover print runs featured the simple yellow banana picture only.
